This drawing shows Saint Agnes of Rome, a young girl who stayed faithful to Christ even in the face of death. I first read about her when I was about fifteen, in a small red book with a pencil sketch on the cover. It was the first saint’s biography I ever read, and her story stayed with me.
Agnes was only thirteen when she was executed during the time of Emperor Diocletian because she refused to give up her faith.
I wanted to show her as a young teenager — peaceful and deep in thought, with a gentle smile and silent strength.
